Star, Idaho has been discovered and fits its namesake perfectly. Located about 17 miles from downtown Boise, it has quickly become a favorite city for those who want to access Boise and Meridian quickly, but have a little more space and a smaller, tight knit community. Surrounded by the Boise River to the South, the Boise foothills to the north, and old farmland scattered throughout, it is a beautiful place to live.

But the foothills and river are not the only thing people love about Star, Idaho…it’s the small-town community feel with community activities, neighbors who you have barbecues with, and the feeling of a bit more peace when you’re really only about 15 minutes from Costco or 20 min from downtown Boise. And it’s growing. The current population from the 2023 census was close to 13,000. But the city is working hard to allow for growth and maintain the small-town feel. They have a very comprehensive city plan that you can check out here: Star, Idaho Comprehensive Plan

While Star, Idaho has its own schools, community activities, sport fields, parks, library, grocery stores, and very small downtown, when you live here, you drive about 10 minutes East to Eagle for some great restaurants, the emergency room, Home Depot, and things like that. You can also head about 15 minutes towards Meridian for Costco, and all the other shopping.

Pros and Cons: Star, Idaho is a peaceful place to live, and even with homes being built rapidly, it still maintains its open feel with views of pastures, hills, and mountains off to the Northeast. It offers more homes that are smaller and more affordable than Eagle, so you can enjoy the benefits of Eagle without having to buy a big Eagle house. It has access to the Boise River and quick access to Highway 16 or 55 to get up into the Idaho wilderness. It is very focused on community, so the community activities like a Fall Harvest Festival and Fourth of July Fireworks are super fun. It’s safe, clean, and oh, the weather is the same as Boise.

Some Cons: There is only one main road through town. State Street, or highway 44, is 4 lanes wide until the town, and then it not only drops to 2 lanes, but the speed limit drops to 25 and there is 1 signal- so it gets very, very backed up. There are some backroads to help alleviate that. It’s lacking in dining options… there are a couple of new restaurants, but you’ll really have to go to Eagle for better options. The downtown could be made so cute and a great place to visit if the city chose to allow it. Really, there aren’t too many cons, but it can be a bit too small for some people.

Star, Idaho was originally farms and pasture. As growth came in, it was mainly either in smaller single-family homes, 1000-2500 sf on typical 8000-15000 sf lots, or estate custom homes up on the hills with acreage. There is now quite a mix, except for one notable exception…it is the “Land of the RV Garages”. I don’t know the statistics, but I’d bet it has just about the highest number of homes with RV garages in all of Idaho.

You can find homes near the river, communities like Heron River Ranch and Star River Ranch that are filled with walking paths, ponds, waterways, and access to the Boise River. And then most of the new homes are being built by the base of the foothills on typical size lots and are anywhere from 1300-4000 sf.
